Project 1: Multi-Metal additive manufacturing: DEDMechanics and material characterization of multi-material metal additive steel structures. Exploring the fracture propagation of bio-inspired metal structures by performing fracture experiments and simulations in Abaqus to understand the crack tip toughening mechanisms. Tuning of metal printer to print multiple materials with 300 micron fine prints. Starting from process- material-structure-property relationship to optimize the 3D printing process. Further bio-inspired designs are investigated to evade strength ductility trade-off.The heat treatment optimization is followed by microstructure characterization involving SEM, XRD, EBSD.Project 2: Multifunctional carbon fiber based structural batteries.Development of novel structural fiber cathode coatings to coat the fibers conformal. The conformal coating allows to make strong bonding with the carbon fibers thus enhancing the structural as well as electrochemical response.
