ABOUT MOHAMMAD JAMAL KHATTAK
I serve as Department Head and Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, bringing over 30 years of experience in advancing infrastructure systems through leadership, research, and practice-oriented innovation.I hold a PhD from Michigan State University, specializing in pavement design and materials, and my work focuses on translating advanced research into solutions that improve pavement performance, durability, and long-term asset management. My expertise centers on pavement engineering and materials, supported by strengths in pavement management and performance modeling, nondestructive testing, numerical modeling, and transportation and geotechnical materials.As Department Head, I provide strategic academic and research leadership while overseeing externally funded R&D programs totaling over $20 million. I have led or contributed as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on projects exceeding $5.0 million sponsored by local, state, and federal agencies. I also founded the Infrastructure and Materials Testing Facility, helping establish a nationally recognized pavement research and testing program.My scholarly contributions include 100+ peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and U.S. patents, along with regular presentations at national and international conferences. I am passionate about mentoring students, developing the next generation of engineers, and strengthening the connection between academic research and real-world infrastructure needs.I am a licensed Professional Engineer (Louisiana), Director of the Infrastructure and Materials Testing Facility, affiliated with IMRI and CAST at UL Lafayette, and an active member of ASCE and other professional societies.
