ABOUT MOHAMAD FAKIH

Mohamad Fakih, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FSHEA is Senior Vice President for Quality and Safety, Chief Quality Officer, Ascension, a nonprofit health system of more than 100 hospitals, over 2,600 sites of care, and more than 30 senior living sites. He leads the work on improving quality and safety across the continuum of care. His main focus is to standardize the process to optimize disease management and avert patient harm. A substantial component of his work is building a structure to improve clinical care, from identifying best practices, creating a process that supports both patient and provider adoption, and hardwiring it to achieve sustainable results. Some related achievements include improving mortality, mitigating the risk for healthcare-associated infections and medication related harm, and enhancing both antimicrobial stewardship and sepsis outcomes in the acute care space. Another area of his focus revolves on a comprehensive approach to chronic disease management in the ambulatory space to optimize patient’s health, in addition to promoting health equity. He has led initiatives to reduce preventable admissions of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic renal insufficiency. He has also championed a system initiative to improve diabetes care, resulting in the elimination the disparities in glucose control between black/ African Americans and other patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the system clinical response to management of infection and preventing exposure to associates and patients. Addressing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on quality and safety, he developed and led the implementation of “Recognize & Rescue\'\' effort to reduce the risk of harm to patients and promptly address the decompensating patient starting 2022. The initiative has been associated with sustained improvements in risk-adjusted mortality by 20%, reduction in healthcare associated infections, and safety events. Since 2022, he has led efforts to reduce unwarranted clinical variation with a focus on diagnostic stewardship with significant improvement in outcomes and financial savings.Dr. Fakih is Professor of Medicine (FTA) at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan. He is board certified in Infectious Diseases, and carries an executive Masters degree in Health Management and Policy from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and more than 100 published abstracts.My views are my own.
