Department Chair @Biola University

View department →

When a Department of Journalism formed in 2007 out of a Department of Mass Communication, I inherited chair leadership. I had been a program coordinator in journalism at Asbury University. To this new Biola position I brought the insights of an educator with experience in daily news work (from two regions of the country) backed by doctoral research in educational policy studies in higher education. To my chair duties I brought research interest in the history of journalism in the U.S, along with evolving experience and study of the trends in student learning in schools and departments of Journalism across the U.S. As chair, I made it my goal to articulate and model best practices in teaching and student success preparation — practice as good or better than the best in Christian higher education and higher education nationally. I chose to step away from the chair position in 2014 to devote more time to my research and writing, and to program development, and collaboration with faculty at Biola and across the U.S.

ABOUT MICHAEL LONGINOW

I teach, I learn, I research, I write, I advise, I network, I collaborate. And I care.I profess Journalism, Digital Media and Writing (of all kinds) and constantly study the patterns and changes to each. I also study how young adults learn — to help them do it better. I have a passion to serve. And my heart breaks for those on the margins, those alienated, and those who have been victimized (because I\'ve been there.)I have been teaching, advising, and doing the administration of journalism and digital media education for 36 years. In that time, I have learned ways to make departments and universities stand strong and learn to adapt. I\'ve done that by helping bring consensus out of confusion, insight out of misunderstanding, and adaptation out of lethargy.I have built connections to the best journalists and journalism educators across the U.S. and have learned from their wins and losses. I count myself part of a coalition of educators whose passion is teaching, whose experience has been in universities of less than enrollment (where teaching really matters and where research comes hard), and who share genius freely.I follow God with all my heart. I love my wife, my kids and my dog. And I\'m not from where I live. I come from a family of displaced persons, and I consider myself a person on a journey. That last part is really important because it sharpens all I do.
