The project aims to explore the role of mitochondria in ageing and dementia. Mitochondria acquire damage to their DNA, lipids and proteins as we age – but it is not known whether these changes are innocent bystanders, or whether they contribute to the ageing process itself. This post forms a new link between the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (MBU, Prof Patrick Chinnery) and the Centre for Protein Misfolding in the Department of Chemistry (Profs Chris Dobson and Michele Vendruscolo). Their joint aim is to use a combination of genomic, cell biology and chemical techniques to determine whether observed mitochondrial changes drive senescence in the brain, and thereby contribute to dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
