Biowaste to products (BW2Pro)As part of the ERDF funding program \"Bioeconomy Bio-Ab-Cycling\", the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Sector is funding the construction of modular biorefineries. On a pilot scale, they are testing how high-quality raw materials can be recovered from waste and wastewater using sustainable bioeconomy. The most holistic possible material recycling of biowaste is being tested and demonstrated as part of the \"Biowaste to products (BW2Pro)\" project. For this purpose, an existing biowaste recycling plant of the Rems-Murr waste management company will be expanded into a decentralized biorefinery with the possibility of obtaining secondary raw materials and end products. In total, four high-quality secondary raw materials are produced in the project: fibres, cellulases, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), biogas, and two finished products: biodegradable plant pots, fertilizer, produced by the biorefinery. The majority of the residual materials occurring in the process are circulated. The biorefinery will be set up and operated on the site of the organic waste fermentation plant of the Rems-Murr waste management company in Backnang-Neuschöntal.

ABOUT MUSTAFA KEMAL AK

Hello, I’m Mustafa Kemal Ak. A German researcher of Turkish origin, I’m shaping my career journey with a diverse background. After completing my undergraduate studies in Turkey, I embarked on an Erasmus exchange program in 2014 that led me to Stuttgart University, where I eventually chose to settle and obtain German citizenship. I am currently a research associate at Stuttgart University, dedicating my efforts to projects like Biowaste to Products (BW2PRO), which encompass solid waste management, composting, biogas, and organic waste management. My educational and professional experiences across both Turkey and Germany have endowed me with the privilege of working and residing in European Union countries due to my German citizenship. Additionally, thanks to my Turkish heritage, I hold the right to work in Turkey. I’m fortunate to possess the ability to work in both the European Union and Turkey, which allows me to bridge insights and create impactful solutions on a broader scale. My aim is to leverage these experiences to contribute to societal change by devising sustainable solutions and embracing diverse perspectives. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn.
