About Michael J. Proulx
What does it mean, to see? To perceive? My primary interest in psychology is cognition at the nexus of technology and neuroscience. My research takes root in examining cognition and attentional control within the visual system, and also examining how multisensory processing contributes to perception and cognition. How we we pay attention to the many features and objects in our environment is a key aspect of cognition, and the visual system and eye tracking provide an excellent system for its study. Advancing eye tracking applications for extended reality (XR) is now my key focus. My work with individuals with visual impairments has helped to reveal the role of visual experience for cognition and how the \"visual\" parts of the brain process other information in the absence of visual input. Much of this work has used an augmented reality \'sensory-substitution\' device (called ‘The vOICe’) that provides visual information by translating visual input into sound. I therefore study multiple sensory modalities and utilize multiple methods like VR, AR, psychophysics, eye tracking, EEG, and MRI to best understand the psychological and neural underpinnings of cognition in human and non-human animals through collaborative studies on bees, zebrafish and non-human primates.Specialties: cognitive science, human-technology interaction, eye tracking, sensory substitution, attention, crossmodal cognition, multisensory perception, AR, VR, XR, synaesthesia, visual search, memory, training, human factors, human-computer interaction, and conceptual learning

Research Scientist
Jun 2022 — Present · Redmond, WA, US
I am a Research Scientist at Meta\'s Reality Labs, the home of Oculus VR, Quest Mixed Reality and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses with Meta AI, and now the Meta Ray Ban Display smart glasses - as well as Project Aria, our smart glasses research platform. My focus is on Behavioral AI, Cognition and Technology, with the aim to integrate AI, multimodal sensors, human perception, and Inclusive Design for enhanced AI and AR/VR applications.
