Sejal Mittal is a Data Engineer and a final year Data Science graduate student at Columbia University, driven by the mission of data for good. She believes that “we are surrounded by data but starved for insights” and that the true power of data lies in using it to create meaningful, positive change.Her journey began with inspiration from her father’s relentless work in his factory, which sparked her fascination with technology’s potential to solve real-world challenges. That early spark led her to pursue a Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communication Engineering, where she explored IoT, AI, Neural Networks, and Cloud Computing.Sejal went on to contribute at Amazon, where she built large-scale data infrastructures and designed dashboards that improved operational efficiency. As a Data Engineering Intern with AWS FinTech, she led a project to modernize CRATE’s data lake with Apache Iceberg - reducing storage by ~80% and improving query efficiency by ~88%. The experience reinforced her ability to think big, simplify complexity, and deliver impact at scale.At Columbia, she continues to grow at the intersection of machine learning, cloud systems, and AI, while staying anchored in her belief that “it’s the heart that is important.” For Sejal, data science is not just about building pipelines or models - it’s about leveraging skills to benefit the world, uncover hidden challenges, and create solutions that serve both businesses and society.
