Award-winning writer, editor, lecturer, moderator, blogger, and podcast host with an international footprint, specializing in interior design, architecture, garden design, travel, the decorative arts, and historic preservation (especial interest in houses of worship and private chapels). Contributor to The New York Times, The World of Interiors, Nest, House & Garden, Town & Country, Travel + Leisure, Frederic, and other publications. Host of The AD Aesthete, a Condé Nast podcast, and founder of An Aesthete’s Lament, named one of the world’s best style blogs by Elle Decoration (UK). Author of multiple design-oriented books (presently working on three more), and a co-host of Insider Journeys for Indagare and for Classical Excursions. Recipient of a 2017 honorary doctorate of fine arts from The New York School of Interior Design. Member of the board of trustees of Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation and of Hyde Hall, as well as a committee member at Drayton Hall. Co-founder of Irwin & Lane, an antique and decorating business on Chairish. As I said in my Commencement Address at The New York School of Interior Design, re why I care about my preferred subject: ‘Interiors are, after all, where our past and present await our future. They are where we wake and where we sleep, where we make love, where we argue and pout, where we bring up children, where we experience the humdrum as well as the transcendent, and very often, most often, where we die. An interior is the first thing most of us ever see and often the very last’.
