About Mitch Gerhardt
I’m Mitch, a PhD student in the Department of Engineering Education and a master’s student in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. Previously, I earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from VT and worked as a software engineer for the automotive industry before returning to graduate school. My research focuses on engineering expertise and generative artificial intelligence (GAI); in particular, how GAI is transforming the way engineering expertise is developed, displayed, recognized, and trusted. I\'m currently examining the use of GAI for qualitative research methods, STEM graduate students’ GAI utilization, and how STEM higher education instructors negotiate and uphold “academic integrity” amid widespread GAI use. My work asks how these technologies can be thoughtfully integrated into engineering education to enhance learning and practice, while also considering the challenges they produce for expertise development and expert-dependent societies.
