ABOUT MITCH LUBIN

Last August I had lunch with an old friend who had been hired to teach at Hogan Prep in Kansas City, Missouri and I casually suggested he give them my name. Two days later I got a call from the recruiter and I accepted the position. 7th grade Social Studies. I have 65 students in 4 classes— 12 & 13 year olds. My curriculum is World Geography, but I try to incorporate little “life lessons” whenever possible. I continue to learn a lot from these young “scholars,” and am constantly amazed, and humbled, by what so many of them have seen, & been through, at such a young age. To them it is normal, it is what they know & have lived through. To a guy like me, who grew up in the suburbs of Johnson County and spent many years working in suburban Kansas schools, it is a completely different world. Formerly Bishop Hogan for 80 years, Hogan Prep High and Middle are now Charter schools owned by Phalen Leadership Academy, out of Indianapolis. Our CEO is Earl Phalen. Our students are from all over KC. Yes there are many challenges, & it is unlike anything I have ever experienced before. But I do my best to “be there” for my students. Regardless of a kid’s background, my #1 core value for working with kids is to love them,I spent 31 years in education in Kansas, as a secondary social studies teacher for 15, and a high school and middle school administrator for 16. Have taught geography, US Government, American History (standard and AP), coached baseball at Shawnee Mission NW, a Kansas 6A school,(state champions in \'90,\'91 & \'93); assistant coach in volleyball and girls basketball. Was an athletic director and assistant principal at another 6A high school, Blue Valley NW, oversaw entire athletics & activities program for 8 years. Served as a middle school principal in a 3A school in Wellsville, KS, just south of the KC area, for 8 years. I also taught western Civilization for six years at Neosho County Community College in Ottawa, KS primarily to KU students. Retired in 2013, served as a substitute teacher, including several long term assignments in the Gardner-Edgerton school district, three of which were in classrooms with autistic students, an awesome and humbling experience. Worked at General Dynamics Information Technology, which became Maximus, as a Supervisor at the call center in Lawrence, KS. They sign people up for health insurance and Medicare. I have two kids. Noelle turned 21 in March and is a sr at U of Missouri Science & Technology (formerly Mo. Rolla) and Grant turned 24 in February and is working full time for Sarpino’s Restauant in Leawood.
