ABOUT MIRIAM COHEN

Dr. Miriam Cohen is a Law Professor and Canada Research Chair in Human Rights and International Justice at Université de Montréal, Faculty of Law. She is an award-winning author, and has published widely in international law, human rights and public law. Her book “Realizing Reparative Justice for International Crimes\", Cambridge University Press (2020) won the Scholarly Book Award of the Canadian Council on International Law and the Quebec Bar Foundation Award. As an international lawyer, she has worked at the United Nations and international courts and tribunals. Dr. Cohen acted as expert Counsel in a case before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). She has also appeared as co-counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada.Dr. Cohen is the recipient of prestigious research grants and awards, including from the Government of Canada and Quebec research councils. She holds graduate degrees in law from Harvard Law School, the University of Cambridge, Université de Montréal and Leiden University, where she obtained her Ph.D. in international law. She was a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow and John Peters Humphrey Scholar while at Harvard Law School, and a Right Honourable Paul Martin Sr. Scholar at the University of Cambridge. Her thesis at Harvard Law School received a competitive award and her doctoral thesis was supported by a Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies scholarship. Prior to joining academia, she had extensive experience in legal advisory roles at the International Court of Justice and at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. She is a lawyer and accredited mediator with the Quebec Bar, and she has previously worked at Norton Rose Fulbright in Montreal. Dr. Cohen was a Research Fellow at Harvard Law School and a Rapporteur to an Expert Committee on a Draft Convention on Crimes against Humanity. She was also part of a delegation to an arms control treaty negotiation at the United Nations, in Geneva. She has acted in numerous Board of Directors, and currently sits in the Canadian Council for International Law and the Société québécoise de droit international boards, where she is also Vice-president. She is originally from Brazil, and she researches and consults in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
