Experience
Propulsion Engineer
Jun 2021 — Present · Kent, WA, US
Technical lead for a burner heat exchanger (BHEx) used on lunar landers and transporters. BHEx was designed to take cryogenic hydrogen or oxygen, vaporize the cold liquid, and heat the resulting gas further for use as propellants for vehicle thrusters, tank repressurization, and self-feeding the BHEx.Propulsion design engineer on the BE-7 dual-expander cycle vacuum engine. Responsible for overall engine configuration, alternate configurations, external interfaces and envelopes, piping and instrumentation diagram (P & ID), sensor and actuator list (S&A), coordination between all internal component teams and external engine customers, and the engine mass report. Also responsible for design and analysis of all secondary structures and fluid components including avionics panels, support brackets, instrumentation clamps, manifolds, flanges, main ducting, tubing, and seals. Also worked to standardize drafting, improve design manufacturability, leverage additive manufacturing, improve build processes, streamline procurement, accelerate decision making, and reduce non-conformances. Implemented lessons learned into engine block upgrades.Developed a series of unique metallic additively manufactured check valves with anti-chatter properties for in-house production. Rapid prototyping enabled by stereolithography (SLA) and plastic fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing. Designed and analyzed rocket’s (New Glenn) first stage dump subsystem, including fluid components, tubing, and secondary structures. Designed, analyzed, and tested prototype fluid fittings. Developed procedures for the cryogenic components testing facility. Prepared structural flange tests and coded strain gauge post-processing MATLAB script. Designed fluid panel for training new engineers. Designed and analyzed large scale upgrades to pneumatics testing facility for accommodating New Glenn’s nitrogen pressure regulation system. Assisted in the design of a full-scale rocket engine vacuum test facility.
