About Mindy Rose
I’ve worked in admissions at Skidmore and Richmond, spent eleven years counseling at Lawrenceville, built a counseling program from scratch at Shanghai American School, and now oversee twenty-one schools, seven thousand students, and five hundred counselors at Dipont Education. The question that drives my work is simple and feels urgent: What if college counseling were not about navigating the system but about teaching students how to decide? That question became Big Idea Breakdown™, a decision literacy framework developed in collaboration with Jay McTighe, architect of Understanding by Design. It was tested at Lawrenceville, rebuilt from scratch in Shanghai, and scaled across twenty-one schools in China. It’s now in use at UCLA’s counselor training program. It teaches students to sort what belongs to them from what doesn’t and to act deliberately under uncertainty. My book, What Belongs to You: Learning to Decide in an Age of Optimization, argues that the admissions crisis is, at its core, a developmental one — and that the capacity for judgment must be taught, not assumed.I’m based in Saratoga Springs, NY. I speak regularly to schools and at conferences. My writing has appeared widely, including in The New York Times and on The Bridge, my Substack.
