About Milton Puryear
Milton Puryear is a co-founder of Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), which is causing and coordinating the creation and maintenance of the new 14-miles of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and creation of other segments to complete the entire 27-mile route. Milton manages the development of the greenway including planning, right of way assemblage, capital funding and coordination with public agencies and property owners, design and construction of open spaces, installation of stormwater infrastructure. The goal of the greenway is to bring non-motorized commuting and healthful active recreation within walking distance to millions of Brooklyn residents while connecting Brooklyn’s waterfront communities. BGI also seeks to restore environmental services to the waterfront of Brooklyn including green infrastructure and restoration of native plant communities. For 13 years, Milton also served as the project manager for the restoration of the Mill River and the creation of Mill River Park & Greenway in Stamford, CT working with the Mill River Collaborative. He has managed the removal of two dams, the reconstruction of the river channel, restoration of two salt marshes, remediation of several acres of invasive plants and establishment of over 5 acres of native vegetation in riparian areas. The river restoration has lowered flood levels so that future 100-year floods will be contained in the new park floodplain and resulted in a revision of the FEMA flood map for Downtown Stamford. Milton attended Yale College and Harvard Business School.
