ABOUT MILTON A. ORTEGA

When I immigrated to Canada in 2008, I expected the integration process to be smoother than it turned out to be. Finding networks, mentors, and pathways to belonging was far harder than I\'d imagined.Volunteering changed everything.What started as a way to connect became the bridge that unlocked my professional path, taught me how Canadian systems actually work, and showed me how power and access operate in our communities. That experience shaped everything I do today.Now I lead VolunteerConnector, the organization that powers Canada\'s largest volunteer matching platform, serving volunteers and organizations across 293 communities. We\'re transforming what a volunteer centre can be: not just a matching service, but civic infrastructure that makes belonging possible at scale.I also chair Centro Latino, an organization I co-founded to build what Calgary\'s Latino community needed, a space created by us, for us, centred on civic participation and cultural identity.What drives my work:The belief that no one should feel invisible in the place they call home. And the understanding that inclusion isn\'t about helping people navigate broken systems, it\'s about redesigning those systems entirely.My career has been shaped by this lens. I\'ve advised organizations on everything from governance to wage equity to anti-racist volunteer engagement.
