ABOUT MIKE FAN

The most vulnerable” Mike Fan |(they/them), whose \"dramatic side isremarkable” (Barcza Blog) has performed in 11 languages “sung extremely well and actedeven better” (Opera Ramblings) for organizations across North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia including Pacific Opera Victoria, Le Monument National, and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Mike’s recent operatic roles include a “spectacular” title role of Mozart’s demanding Idomeneo in the original bravura version, Sam Polk in Floyd’s Susannah, and Remendado in Bizet’s Carmen. Recent engagements include Mike’s company début at the Canadian Opera Company in a new, season-opening, Dora-nominated production of Beethoven’s Fidelio as well as the COC’s first Nabucco in its 74-year history, Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre recital début for Asian Heritage Month, and the world première of Chan’s Dragon’s Tale co-produced by Tapestry Opera, Luminato Festival, Soundstreams, and Harbourfront Centre. Among many awards, Mike’s powerful, flexible tenor has received the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Gold Medal, Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques’ Prix Poulenc, and numerous Canada Council for the Arts grants. Mike has competed for the Gran Teatre Liceu’s Tenor Viñas Competition at the Metropolitan and San Francisco Operas, Loren L. Zachary Society Competition at the Los Angeles Opera, Gerda Lissner Competition at the Kosciuszko Foundation, and was a Finalist for the 2022 Canadian National Opera Auditions at Vancouver Opera, two-time Semi-Finalist for the Premiere Opera Foundation, and Semi-Finalist for the Washington National Opera’s True Voice Award. Proudly committed to social justice, Mike is founding Artistic Director of QTBIPOC independent non-profit Opéra Queens where they are often seen as drag diva Tanya Smania. Mike holds degrees in Biomedical Science, Opera & Voice, Speech Arts & Drama, and Piano Performance with additional training at the Rossini Opera Festival and Tampere Conservatoire.
