ABOUT MIKE REYNOLDS

I’ve always been a “math person,” even before starting school. It started with baseball cards and tracking live stats, learning early that a.280 batting average or 30 home runs can tell a story about value. Numbers felt like a glimpse into the future. Like a map that hints at what might be around the next bend.In high school, after getting a Commodore 64, I built a text-prompt game that simulated a day at Kings Island amusement park. The goal was simple: maximize “Fun Points” under a time constraint. Years later, I was fortunate to apply the same approach at Disney Parks to maximize “Excellent Experiences” while crafting long-term plans across Disney’s global parks.College and grad school opened my eyes to complex, large-scale systems and optimization. I did QC testing for ScaLAPACK, which orchestrated distributed linear algebra across massively parallel supercomputers. Software that now underpins much of the Python ecosystem (NumPy/SciPy) and today’s distributed training approaches in Generative AI.During the early dot-com era, I did research for Yahoo! where I highlighted superior quality search results coming from a tiny startup called Google. I was fascinated by how Google connected the user prompt to relevant results via the attention-based PageRank algorithm, similar in spirit to their AI breakthrough (e.g, “Attention Is All You Need”). Contextual attention appears to be the secret sauce to analytics. My 18 years at Disney gave me the chance to hone both analytical and strategic skills, and to learn alongside extraordinarily talented Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) teams. I learned to pair analytics with story, because at Disney, story truly matters. When it came time to open a new chapter, I found Disney-level innovation at Power Design, a St. Petersburg-based national design-build contractor. Today, as the company continues to grow, I lead Strategy & Analytics and get to apply the same large-scale systems thinking and optimization mindset. Only now, I apply it to the uniquely challenging “math” of construction with its many moving parts.I feel extremely lucky to be working in a modern playground of data and modeling tools. It fits the curiosity-driven path I’ve taken, especially my lifelong intuitive connection to the computer prompt. I always dreamed of writing algorithms that could return universal results to any question. Watching that dream become real, and putting it to work in responsible, practical ways, feels like coming full circle.
