About Mike Lonergan

You are the most responsive PM I have worked with in my career”; “I’m amazed at the breadth of your technical knowledge”.Some PMs launch things and move on; I build capabilities, mold them to meet the users where they need us to be. I’m the guy you bring in to make sure the devil gets flushed out of the details - an accurate and technically relevant definition for every search field, an investigation workflow that makes sense to the under-trained users and delivers useful decision-making data to the experts, and a release plan that factors in every single stakeholder. I’m that guy that volunteers to figure out how dozens of shared services should be divvied up in the COGS model, and who has more patience and persistence than anyone else to follow through right through the source repos to figure out the answer to a gnarly customer question. If you want the API documentation to be factually accurate *and* make sense to novice developers, I’m your guy.I am driven by WHY - crystallizing outcomes and hypotheses up front, defining the problem-to-be-solved, sharing that context as widely as possible. Helping my engineers direct their amazing talents towards the customer value; helping my customers achieve their \"5th Why\".I fight every single day to simplify the experience of using software, so that my end users are more confident, effective and well-informed than before I got there. I treat every user interaction like it\'s their first impression - I assume my users are smart but don\'t have the time or freedom to learn yet another interaction model. My leadership philosophy is “you don’t have to be the foremost expert to speak up in the room”. Leadership is helping move the room forward despite not having enough information to be sure you\'re right.Empathy is my superpower. I am the a**hole who always asks,\"What is the value of this change? What actions will you be able to take after this change that you couldn\'t before?\"\"How will this improve their decision-making and satisfaction?\" I excel at the on-the-ground troubleshooting and on-the-fly decisions about what we absolutely need in the product and what we can defer - especially when the inevitable surprises crop up.

Experience

  1. Product Line Manager

    Carbon Black

    Feb 2023 — Present

Most-in-demand PM to address the \"hard cross-platform problems\". I sweat the details to deliver on the promise that VMware Carbon Black is an API-first SaaS-native EDR security platform. I ensure developers and integration partners have APIs that enable them to examine or exfil their data that leads to actionable insights, and end users have intuitive, trustworthy, action-oriented UI. My goal is 100% customer and partner retention through confidence-building UI, UX and IA.I’m the Data Czar for the Carbon Black Cloud. Data Forwarder, integrations, APIs and clear, intuitive docs and data models. COGS guru, license consumption advocate. I\'ve launched products and dozens of features on our platform. Currently leading and driving a revamp of our search and data technologies in service of XDR transformation. As the worst sales engineer the company, I make sure I’m able to setup and demonstrate every feature of the products I own.Along the way, I’m building a data-driven metrics culture by example, and mentoring the next generation of product colleagues to become better at it than me. During organizational downtime, I\'m a self-starter who will turn over over every rock, working with colleagues and stakeholders to find and fix whatever\'s broken - docs, UI, analytics, community forums.Key Metrics for Data Forwarder:1. Adoption: drove adoption of CBC Data Forwarder to capture 40% of customers (by cloud revenue)2. Engagement: customers who adopt Data Forwarder login to the CBC console > 10% more frequently than non-Forwarder customers3. Stickiness: customers adopting Data Forwarder are 40% more likely to renew
