ABOUT MIKE SMITH

Over the last 21 years of my career, I have worked as a registered clinical counsellor/art therapist, clinical supervisor, professor, and program manager in a number of different settings including private practice, various non-profit counselling programs, provincial conferences for Trans youth and their families, an adult mental health and substance use team, a concurrent disorders program, and higher education programs for graduate students. I am currently an approved First Nations Health Authority provider and have clinical and program experience working with both Squamish Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation. As a therapist, my theoretical approach integrates Interpersonal theory, Person Centered theory, Cognitive Theory, Attachment theory and Family Systems theory. My main model of therapy comes from Edward Teyber\'s book \"The Interpersonal Process in Psychotherapy: A Relational Approach\", which I integrate with CBT, CPT for PTSD, DBT, Art Therapy, and a variety of other models and interventions that fit for clients and their specific needs. I consider myself Feminist theory informed and trauma informed at all times. My specialization tends to be attachment, trauma, complex trauma, and interpersonal relationships. However, I am very comfortable working with grief and loss, stress, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidal ideation/safety planning. As an Approved Clinical Supervisor I specialize in providing clinical supervision for verbal therapists, art therapists, and expressive arts therapists working from a variety of theoretical perspectives and models. I have clinically supervised a First Nations specific child and youth counselling program, a general child and youth counselling program, a family preservation and support program, a Sexual Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP) for children and youth and an adult individual/couple/family counselling program, an adult concurrent disorders program, and multiple graduate students at Adler University. I currently offer clinical supervision and supervision of supervision (SoS) to obtain the Approved Clinical Supervisor title at the BCACC.As a biracial person in the world, I am also acutely aware of structural racism, culture, language, oppression, and discrimination. I am currently offering online counselling and clinical supervision sessions Monday, Wednesday, and Friday so feel free to check out my website at or go ahead and book sessions with me through this link: https://aws-portal.owlpractice.ca/abccounselling/booking.
