As a Labor Relations Advocate for UC San Diego Health, I consult and advise University administration and management on best practices regarding the implementation of collective bargaining agreements and managing relations with the 15 labor unions representing approximately employees.My duties include- Managing daily interactions with very active Unions such as the California Nurses Association, the United Auto Workers, the Teamsters, and AFSCME- Representing University interests in accretion bargaining (Pharmacists) and successor bargaining (UPTE units including the HX, RX, and TX units)- Interpreting provisions of collective bargaining agreements based on contract principles and past practice- Training faculty and department supervisors on duties and obligations arising from collective bargaining agreements and applicable laws- Advising University administration and department supervisors regarding corrective action and progressive discipline for employees including counseling memos and written warnings- Representing University administration and management in labor relations meetings and grievance meetings

After a dozen years of working in various pursuits in the private sector - primarily as an associate attorney in civil litigation focusing on construction litigation and insurance defense - I took a risk and made the switch into the public sector. Utilizing the analytical and interpersonal skills I developed as an attorney, I now represent the University of California San Diego as a Labor Relations Advocate. I first worked with the campus side team, and now I work on the health side. I thoroughly enjoy the dynamic energy and boundless optimism that permeate the campus environment. My professional goal is to facilitate and enhance the relationship between University administration management and the many hard-working individuals who make UC San Diego a great place to work, study, and research.
