About Mike Nickerson

I am a unique combination of generalist and technical expert. I have worked in firmware, electronics, ASICs, and mechanical hardware. I also have background in testing all of those areas. However, I also understand business profitability and processes. I also managed teams of firmware and hardware engineers. Finally, I am an expert on data analysis for Business Intelligence and driving product changes through data. While working in LaserJet Firmware, I was the Project Manager for the HP Easy Select User Interface for HP MFPs. This new user interface was one of the high points of my career because we touched so many customers in a positive way. This intuitive UI was shipped with all Enterprise HP MFP products from Fall 2006 through Spring 2017!As Warranty Program Manager, I created processes to define the top warranty issues, developed initiatives and work streams to reduce warranty costs, and institutionalized changes to improve future products. These efforts have made a significant improvement in LaserJet warranty costs and failure rates.Most recently, I have been using all available LaserJet databases to understand device usage and failure modes and drive changes into LaserJet development that allow the products to work as customers actually use them and expect them to work. This has allowed me to become involved with Vertica and AWS Redshift databases, SQL queries and complex data analysis. It has also made significant reductions in LaserJet warranty and contract support costs, as well as better understanding of the LaserJet supplies business.Specialties: Project Management, Program Management, understanding technical details and tradeoffs of all sorts, Achieving the best balance between business needs, technical capabilities, and customer deliveries. I also have a passion for quality deliverables and achieving the best-possible results through good processes.Leading high performance teams to amazing results by defining the overall objectives, giving them freedom to do the work their way and trusting in their results.After retiring from HP, I started a part time job servicing sewing machines for the largest quilt store in Idaho. That uses my background in retail products, but in a different direction. After additional training, I became the lead technician and responsibility for long arm sewing machines.
