About Mike Crowder

I worked for 27 years full-time in broadcast news in South Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky. I spent 23 years as a radio news anchor-reporter and sports announcer, and four years as a TV news producer. I covered presidential candidate visits between 1991 and 2016. I covered George HW Bush when he was president in 1990 and 1991, and when he was campaigning for South Carolina US Senator Strom Thurmond\'s final re-election in 1996. I covered Bill Clinton as a candidate in 1991, and when he campaigned for Hillary Clinton in 2008 and 2016. I also covered Hillary Clinton in 2008. I had the opportunity to cover Colin Powell in 1995, Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, and Oliver North in 2006, Michelle Obama in 2008, and Chelsea Clinton in 2016. I also covered at least a half-dozen current or future governors, congressmen and US senators. I covered political races for the state legislature, governor, Congress and the US Senate. I covered the South Carolina legislature for six years, along with the governor’s office and state government agencies and departments. I was among a group of reporters who interviewed Steve Spurrier three times while he was the head football coach at the University of South Carolina. I also was involved in numerous interviews with Gregg Marshall when he was the men\'s basketball coach at Winthrop University, before he moved on to become the men\'s basketball coach at Wichita State University, where he led the Shockers to the Final Four. I attended a press conference involving former Atlanta Braves\' third baseman and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones. I also interviewed the late James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, when he showed up unannounced at Thurmond\'s final re-election party in 1996. The highlight of my broadcasting career was doing radio play by play for Fort Campbell High School football in 2007, when the Falcons won their first state championship in nearly 30 years. During the state championship game broadcast in Louisville, KY, as many as members of the 101st Airborne Division deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan streamed it online. Once my broadcasting career ended, I gave more than 7500 rides for Uber—primarily in 2018 and 2019–in the Nashville metro area. I met people from all of the 48 contiguous states, all of the southern Canadian provinces, and every continent (except for Antarctica). I had many great conversations with visitors, especially during longer trips. I was accused of driving like a New Yorker and took it as a compliment. I was too impatient to sit behind slow or non-moving traffic.
