ABOUT MIKE BARKER
An experienced Board Advisor, Board Chair, Board member and Senior R&D Leader from 20-year career with Johnson & Johnson. More than 30 years of industry experience in the field of innovation and R&D across medical technology and orthopaedics. As Worldwide Vice President for Orthopaedics R&D at J&J, provided strategic leadership for a global business with sales of $4.5B responsibility for a team of 450 employees across 5 sites in the UK, Europe, and China. Responsible for all aspects of innovation, new product commercialisation, and organisational leadership and has successfully launched more than 100 orthopaedic system into the global market. Since 2020 has worked as an Independent MedTech Board Consultant providing: consulting and board advisor services to MedTech SMEs and start-ups; NED services; business coaching and mentoring; and monitoring oversight to >£14M of Innovate UK grant funded programs. Professionally accredited as a Chartered Engineer & Fellow with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and a Coach and Mentor with the Institute of Leadership. Has significant international experience having worked for 8 years with J&J in the USA and travelled extensively to many global markets.Brings a wealth of industry experience as a senior member of high performing boards leading large, complex, global, and highly regulated businesses. Broad experience across a wide range of business topics from sales and marketing, to supply chain, to HR and legal, to clinical and regulatory. That breadth is complemented by a deep knowledge and strong track record in all aspects of R&D, from ideation to global commercialisation of new products – both organically and through partnership and acquisition. Since 2020 has successfully applied that experience working in a Board Consulting capacity with a range of SMEs of various sizes. Has developed and led many successful senior teams, and as a qualified coach has developed strong skills in observation, active listening, questioning, summarising, and providing feedback - all critical qualities for an effective NED. Enjoys working with diverse leadership teams and is passionate about developing individuals and teams to deliver challenging organisational goals.
