I take pride in collaborating with brilliant individuals who enable me to manage the Environmental Services Department\'s (ESD), Sustainability & Policy (dubbed SuPo) Workgroup. With a vision of \"Collaboration on all levels,\" SuPo\'s mission is to implement sustainability initiatives that support City utilities and the community. The workgroup consists of two sections: Sustainability Support and Building Performance Ordinance (BPO).Sustainability Support provides guidance to various utility divisions, including San José Municipal Water System, South Bay Water Recycling, Integrated Waste Management, Watershed Protection, Regional Wastewater Facility, Wastewater Facility CIP, and Climate Smart San José. This support includes department-wide coordination of state and federal legislation and initiatives, overseeing ESD\'s involvement with the City\'s legislative program, leading an interdivisional grants working group, and contributing to ESD utility sustainability efforts.The Building Performance Ordinance Team oversees the Energy and Water Building Performance Ordinance (BPO) program. This program requires large building owners in San José to benchmark energy and water use. The BPO staff ensures compliance for over local buildings annually. The BPO is entering its third implementation phase with the launch of Beyond Benchmarking. This program requires a subset of covered building owners to demonstrate either satisfactory building performance or take steps to improve efficiency.
