ABOUT MICHELLE FERNANDES

I am a dedicated, goal-oriented individual with a high-energy level, honed communication skills, strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail. I have completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from D.J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Mumbai and I am currently pursuing my Masters in ‘Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry’ from University of Toronto, Canada (Fall 2021). “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.\" This adage and my particular interest in physical sciences have fuelled me to do well academically. During the four years of my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to have learned a vast array of courses, ranging from Material and Energy Balance, Thermodynamics, Heat & Mass Transfer Operations, Fluid Mechanics, Process and Piping Engineering, Chemical Reaction Engineering and others. My mathematical abilities found expression in Process Calculations, Transport Phenomena, and Modelling, Simulation & Optimization. My desire to be ready to face the challenges that shall be strewn across my path further saw me complete various internships and work on a research project. In the second year of my undergraduate studies, I had an industrial visit in ‘Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (RCF)’ where I completed my training program on ‘Overview of Urea Process Technology with plant visit’. I developed strong practical skills in all that I studied through an Internship at the Indian Multinational Crude Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). I worked in the Oil Lab of the Regional Geoscience Laboratory on a project titled ‘Flow Assurance Study of crude Oil from the Mumbai Off-Shore Field’. Beyond this, I also worked on a final year project focused on measuring the thermal conductivity of nanofluids in a team of 3 people. The project aimed at finding methods to successfully measure the thermal conductivities of liquids and colloids. The project also involved the designing of a heat exchanger that uses nanofluids as a medium instead of current industry standard fluids. To this end, we used the thermal comparator method to study and measure the thermal conductivity of an ethylene-glycol based nanofluid. Both my project work and my internship experience has given me the confidence in asserting my readiness to now continue study in the field of Chemical Engineering.
