About Michelle Muffett-Lipinski
Interested in working with those who are looking for non-traditional pathways to complex educational issues. I have been an educator for over 25 years and have focused almost exclusively on finding ways to connect our most marginalized students (and their families) to the resources they so desperately need to remain engaged in their education, their families and their communities.
Experience
Founder
Dec 2010 — Present
Everyday, educators, mental health professionals, counselors, law enforcement, medical professionals and countless others witnesses the pain and suffering of youth and their families who were not engaged early enough in the educational, justice and health systems to prevent our young people from progressing to a substance use disorder (SUD) and the comorbid disorders that so often accompany substance using behaviors. Dennis et al (2005) found that the sooner an individual receives treatment the shorter the lifetime struggle related to managing their disease. Yet, across the country students are not engaging in services until their substance use and behavioral health/mental health issues have progressed to the level of truancy, lower school and pro-social engagement (including sports), drop-out, school expulsions, juvenile justice involvement and poly-substance abuse. According to the latest Monitoring the Future statistics (http://monitoringthefuture.org/), despite our best efforts, our children continue to abuse substances at a much higher rate than in the last ten years. Prescription drug abuse is among the fastest growing and most dangerous. Led by Michelle Lipinski, the icanhelpSM team proposes to develop a novel school/community-based program. The icanhelpSM program targets early engagement of youth at-risk or needing help in multiple areas ranging from educational, family, substance use and behavioral health issues and links them to the appropriate resources if available in their community.
