ABOUT MICHELE ROMANO

Dr. Michele Romano obtained his PhD in Engineering at the Centre for Water Systems, College of Engineering, Mathematics & Physical Sciences, University of Exeter in 2013. He is presently working for United Utilities after successfully completing a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the University of Exeter and United Utilities. His research interests and expertise are centred around the development and application of novel (geo)statistical and Artificial Intelligence based methodologies (i.e, involving the use of Statistical Process Control, Cokriging, Artificial Neural Networks, Bayesian Network, Wavelets, Evolutionary Algorithms, etc.) aimed at addressing a wide range of issues in urban water systems. He won the 2013 University of Exeter Best Postgraduate Impact Award for his pioneering work on an technology for the automated detection and location of bursts and other network events in water distribution systems by using sensor data in real-time. This technology is now used companywide in United Utilities benefiting its over 7 million customers. Dr. Romano has authored a significant number of journal and conference papers and he is a regular peer reviewer for high quality international journals, including International Water Association Water Supply: Research and Technology - AQUA and Hydroinformatics, Taylor & Francis Urban Water Journal and Desalination and Water Treatment, and American Society of Civil Engineers Water Resources Planning and Management (he has been selected as a 2013 Outstanding Reviewer for this journal). Dr. Romano is Member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (MCIWEM), Associate of the Higher Education Academy (AHEA), Member of the Hydroinformatics Society of Singapore, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, and Member of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).
