ABOUT MICHELE VAN DER WIELEN

Tansi, I am Nehiyaw, a member of the Waterhen Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. I am grateful to reside in the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən People. My passion lies in advocating for Indigenous rights and driving transformative change within our systems and organizations. I am fully dedicated to fostering a more just and equitable society that values and upholds the rights of Indigenous peoples. Through my work, I strive to create safer and inclusive spaces where Indigenous voices are not only heard but also deeply respected and integrated into decision-making processes across all levels of leadership. Connecting to the wisdom of the land and elders, I center Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and practices in my approach. Through strong relational practice, along with Indigenous-specific anti-racism, cultural safety, and humility competencies, I aim to nurture a thriving and interconnected Indigenous employee community within organizations. I firmly believe that unarmoured leadership, which embraces vulnerability and recognizes the value of learning from mistakes, is essential for generating meaningful change. By embodying these qualities and inspiring others to do the same, I seek to cultivate a culture of growth and collective learning. My expertise encompasses Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Agility, Indigenous-specific anti-racism, trauma-informed practice, and Heart-Centered Leadership. Passion Profile: Transformer, Builder, Healer “Transformational culture work is always relational; it’s not transactional. Real diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work is not about a checklist. It’s about relationships.” ~ Aiko Bethea “You can’t change anything until you make the space for real disruption.” ~ a Brene Brown podcast conversation with Aiko Bethea and Ruchika Tulshyan – https://brenebrown.com/podcast/the-heart-of-leadership-part-1-of-2/ “In the past jobs were about muscles, now they\'re about brains, but in future, they\'ll be about the heart.” - Minouche Shafik, London School of Economics
