ABOUT MICHAEL WILLIAMS
I represent the State of West Virginia in state and federal litigation—chiefly appeals. I also help make sure the State\'s voice is heard in federal administrative proceedings and policy discussions. I sometimes draft attorney general opinion letters, too.In private practice, I represented clients in appeals, mass actions, and other higher-exposure litigation matters. Many of my cases involved matters of significant reputational or financial concern. I was most often in federal court, where I clerked twice.Altogether, I’ve argued dozens of appeals (including cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and four federal circuit courts), and I routinely lead briefing on key constitutional and administrative matters before the U.S. Supreme Court. My work has helped entrench the major-questions doctrine, overturn Chevron deference, reestablish the non-delegation doctrine in Michigan, defend school choice in West Virginia, defeat millions in exposure for private clients, and overturn several unlawful governmental programs.Admitted in West Virginia, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Michigan. All posts my own; I\'m never speaking for my employers.
