Experience
Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (Sbirt) Specialist
May 2014 — Present · Salem, OR, US
Training and consulting over the development of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) in medical settings while focusing on alcohol, illicit drugs, recreational drugs and misuse of medication. This practice is more than a screening but an intervention process for patients whose substance use patterns could undermine medical outcomes. About 23% of patients need some level of substance use intervention, from education, to brief counseling, to specialized treatment either within the medical setting or in collaboration with community treatment programs.Because of SBIRT\'s focus on medical outcomes instead of merely the use of substances, stigma can be reduced for patients. Ultimately, SBIRT\'s role should increase the effectiveness of physical and behavioral health outcomes, reduce costs by increasing efficiency of medical treatments, and increase patient satisfaction with their healthcare.
