I advise clients on hiring and employee retention policies, personnel policies, discipline and termination issues, wage and hour issues, collective bargaining agreements and compliance with employment discrimination and civil rights laws.I am a former Maine Assistant Attorney General and worked in the Criminal Division. In that position, I served as Chief Counsel to the State Department of Public Safety and also prosecuted white-collar crimes. I joined Preti Flaherty in 1980 and served as Managing Partner in from 19••••92. I now serve as Chair of the firm\'s Labor and Employment Practice Group.

ABOUT MICHAEL MESSERSCHMIDT
After many years of practice, I am at a point in my career where I have handled virtually every type of matter directly or indirectly related to employment law. From lawsuits, investigations, and claims involving discrimination and EEOC charges to defending and challenging non-competes; from drafting policies, handbooks, and agreements to conducting employee training; or from negotiating and arbitrating collective bargaining and labor disputes to navigating unemployment tax matters — I’ve seen and done it all. I have found my employment practice to be ever-changing, never boring, and highly enjoyable. My favorite part of this job is problem solving. My clients know that I am only a phone call or email away, day or night—ready to help them with important and sometimes urgent decisions related to their employees. My experience allows me to answer most questions quickly and pragmatically. I tell my clients, I would rather anticipate possible red flags in an imminent employment decision rather than pick up the pieces afterwards and this aspect of my practice allows me to do just that.
