ABOUT MICHAEL R. HICKS
I provide advice and counsel to health care leaders and boards working in a challenged and rapidly changing U.S. health care delivery system. As a health care futurist with an operational background I draw on several decades of operational and strategic leadership in a variety of clinical delivery models, mergers and acquisitions, system integration and innovative applications of people and technology. I have held numerous leadership positions in a variety of clinical delivery organizations. Most recently I was an executive at the University of North Texas Health Science Center serving as Executive Vice-President for Health System Partnerships and Clinical Affairs. My teams led the clinical operations and faculty practice plan for the Health Science Center, were responsible for developing the clinical affiliations and community relationships of UNTHSC and developed SaferCare Texas (a State of Texas publicly-funded patient safety institute). My primary interests focus on leadership development, clinical integration strategies, value creation in care delivery and patient safety that leverage technologies and relationships. I am a frequent invited speaker on the future of health care delivery and clinical practice management, group practice development, strategic planning, negotiation and decision-making theory and practice, and consolidation in the health care industry. I have been active in health care merger and acquisition transactions with experience on both the buyer and seller sides and within both the publicly-traded and private sectors. I received my M.D. degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine, my residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Hospital as well as the Texas Heart Institute. I earned advanced management degrees in business (University of Dallas MBA) and healthcare management (Harvard School of Public Health) and maintain board certifications in Anesthesiology and Clinical Informatics.
