ABOUT MICHAEL WALKER

A team lead in Product Development at Illumina working on Next Generation Sequencing. In addition to working as a project lead, I line manage a team of talented scientists during their day to day activities.I have experience in PDP as well as working on early concept work that leads into this process. I have also worked on the design of chemical systems for imaging, sensing and therapeutics applications, including the targeting of DNA. I am experienced in undertaking detailed analysis with various techniques to monitor biophysical interactions. I am fortunate to have worked in the UK, Italy and India and have presented work at an international level. A bit more detail.Following on from my Ph.D, I worked as a Research Associate in the area of synthetic inorganic chemistry at The University of Sheffield. This involved the design and synthesis of self-assembled metallo-macrocycles. This is an exciting area of chemistry which utilises transition metals and synthetic ligands as molecular building blocks to act as sensors for biologically important targets. I also used cutting edge computational and theoretical studies to model and understand these complex systems.I worked as a Marie Curie Research Fellow in Italy with a small start up company. This was a completely new area of research and allowed me to make a positive contribution to an ongoing project for Alzheimer’s Disease. My previous research has involved building a strong understanding of small molecules (organic and inorganic) designed to interact with genomic DNA, characterising these processes with a variety of biophysical and spectroscopic techniques. Previous research (MChem) has utilised AFM to imagine in-situ bacterial processes on lithographically modified substrates.Specialties: Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry, Purification, Photochemistry, Biological interactions, Data analysis, Computational modelling, Problem solving and leadership.
