ABOUT MICHAEL FRÖHLICH

Michael is a fully qualified German lawyer with a PhD and a postgraduate law degree in intellectual property.Having held increasingly responsible positions in the IP sector for over 25 years, he now leads a team of lawyers and paralegals at the European Patent Office (EPO) responsible for developing policy orientations and solutions to shape the international and European legal framework relating to patents and associated legal areas, including the Unitary Patent and new emerging technologies, substantive and procedural harmonisation, and the negotiation and implementation of international agreements and treaties related to patent law.Prior to joining the EPO, Michael was Senior Director of EU Intellectual Property and Strategy at BlackBerry. In this role, he was responsible for the company\'s IP affairs in Europe and managed a wide range of global matters, with a particular focus on issues at the intersection of patent and competition law in the context of standard-setting initiatives, licensing and litigation. Previously, he helped define and represent Nokia\'s IPR & Standards position. He also acted as Head of Legal Affairs at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), where he helped shaping ETSI’s IPR policy and advised executive bodies on legal issues, particularly in relation to SEPs. Michael also practised law at the Düsseldorf office of Preu Bohlig & Partner, specialising in contentious and pre-contentious IP matters, particularly patents. He has also worked in Brazil for Dannemann Siemsen Advogados.Michael regularly writes and lectures on IP issues. He founded the AIPPI Committee on Patents & Standards and has served many years as its Chairperson. He also acted as Vice-Chair of the GSMA IPR Working Group and Vice-Chair of the LESI Publication Committee.He is bilingual in German and French, business fluent in English, and has a basic knowledge of Portuguese.Specialties: Intellectual Property Rights, particularly patents; Competition Law; Standardisation
