ABOUT MICHAEL CASSENS

Michael Cassens is an educator, creative technologist, gamer, and researcher whose work explores the intersection of technology, creativity, and social impact. His current focus includes enhancing teaching practices through the integration of gaming principles and Generative AI to deliver more engaging and effective learning experiences. He is also dedicated to developing innovative games and applications that foster positive societal change. Michael serves as Director of Esports at the University of Montana, where he champions inclusion, equity, and educational pathways for players and team members. As an Associate Professor in the School of Visual and Media Arts, he teaches in the Game Design and Interactive Media BFA and MFA programs, preparing students to use code, design, and emerging technologies to build a more inclusive and accessible future. In addition to his academic work, Michael is the founder and owner of a consulting company, providing software development services for small to mid-sized businesses. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Biology and an M.S. in Computer Science. Originally from Boulder, Colorado, St. Louis, Missouri, and Victor, Montana, Michael enjoys spending time outdoors with his family—mountain biking, snowboarding, hiking, and photographing the natural world.
