I\'m Michael Bolden, the dean of the UC Berkeley School of Journalism. I help journalists and media leaders navigate the complexity of social and economic disruption to serve diverse democratic communities. I have accomplished this work at the intersection of media, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement in senior roles at The Washington Post, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Stanford University, The San Francisco Chronicle, the American Press Institute, and now at the University of California, Berkeley.My experience provides me with a unique view of how journalism can serve the information needs of our communities and equip change agents to meet them.I believe journalism is a fundamental element of the American experiment, with a great deal of power and responsibility. For the health of our democracy, I believe the press should be at the center of American life. It has the power to connect and unify the American people. Let\'s meet the moment.

   As Dean, I cultivate academic and operational excellence for the School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, the No. 1 public university in the world. This includes leadership and responsibility for all matters relating to the administration of the school, including academic programs, student affairs, faculty affairs, personnel, budgets, alumni engagement, fundraising, and industry relations. I am an advocate for both professional and academic education and I am a champion for the School of Journalism\'s potential. My duties include: Creating new opportunities for our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Fostering a culture of collaboration and shared purpose. Providing leadership in diversity and inclusive excellence. Recruiting, developing and retaining exceptional faculty and staff. Serving as the school\'s chief spokesman and advocate.
