SKILLS
ABOUT MICHAEL ATCHLEY
I started my career as a CPA but after about 4 years I was bored, and I got the entrepreneurial itch. I decided to scratch it by moving back home and joining the family business. Now if you’ve ever been around a family business you know that sometimes they’re good, sometimes they’re bad, and sometimes they’re ugly. Ours was no different. Running a business is tough, and the family dynamic can make it even more so. As time went on, the generation before me retired and I was left in charge. I made a few changes that allowed our people to really thrive, which meant the business thrived too. We grew to be one of the largest home service companies in the state. From the outside, it looked like everything was great. The truth was that the growth had taken its toll on me personally. I was financially healthy, but emotionally spent. I looked around and realized there wasn’t going to be another generation to succeed me. I also had a feeling that I was supposed to do something else – it felt as if I was being defined by my work and I didn’t like the feeling. In 2020 I began to explore exit options, and in 2021 I successfully completed the sale of the business – that’s another story entirely, but the short version is that the timing was good, the exit was smooth, and the business I helped build is still going strong. Shortly after selling the business, a friend and mentor reached out to me and asked if I would be willing to do some business coaching with a few of his clients. I immediately agreed, and quickly found something interesting. Many of the business owners I talked to already had great strategies. They already had the answer they needed, because they had paid tens of thousands of dollars to sales trainers, marketing agencies, and gurus. Yet their business continued to falter. Why? Because they struggled to implement all the great strategies that they had paid for. The vision they had for their business was going unrealized because they couldn’t seem to execute on it. It dawned on me that my purpose was to help leaders learn execution – how to run their business rather than allowing it to run them. I now do this utilizing a proven model called EOS.
