About Michael F Abernathy
Michael Abernathy is the President and CEO at Buckeye State Credit Union, a Community Development Financial Institution in Ohio. Under his leadership, the company experienced its greatest year of profitability and eclipsed $1 Million in net income for the first time in company history. He also helped guide it out of a significant government oversight in 2018. Having worked as a business broker, franchise consultant, business consultant and in commercial lending and retail banking before pursuing his role at the credit union, Michael gained a deep understanding about how to rebuild a company. Today, he continues to use those lessons to create a path toward the credit union’s future.As a leader, he is not only focused on providing an exceptional Employee Experience, but also a quality member experience. Through his transparent and honest communication style, he is able to emotionally connect with members to help them feel the credit union experience. His goal is to help them build a game plan and budget to make better informed financial decisions. According to Michael, “it’s not about getting a loan anymore. It’s about creating successful behaviors.” Over the next few years, he aims to grow Buckeye’s geographic footprint to provide more services across Northeast Ohio and create more resources to reinvest in their company. Throughout his time, Michael has served as member of the Ohio Business Brokers Association, Hall of Fame BNI, and Wadsworth Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors where he pushed credit union leaders and their boards of directors to amplify their voices to support underserved communities. When he is not working, Michael enjoys taking golf trips with his wife Holly, three children, and close friends.Michael received a Master of Business Administration from the New York Institute of Technology and received a BA in Political Science and Art History from Ashland University.
