ABOUT MICHAEL YATES

I am a dedicated educator who has worked for the Halton District School for the past 11 years. I have designed and implement an instrumental music program that is highly respected throughout the HDSB and is known for high standards, engagement and student excellence. I have joined LinkedIn to provide employers and colleagues with more information about my education and experience. I wish to use this website as a networking tool to enhance my career, education, philanthropy endeavours as well as personal and financial growth. My journey into music education began at Mohawk College where I completed a three-year diploma in jazz performance. In 2011, I obtained my Honours Bachelors of Music from McMaster University and was commended for my efforts with the Shannon Reeves Scholarship and Award. In 2013 I completed my B.Ed. at Nipissing University (Schulich School of Education) through the iTeach laptop-learning program. My success in this program was recognized by the university where I was awarded the Cynthia Johnson Memorial Award – an honour bestowed upon a graduating student who displays a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a passion to educate others in music. My qualifications allow me to teach in the junior, intermediate, and senior divisions with a focus on music education. I am currently employed by Hillfield Strathallan College and the Halton District School Board where I have successfully completed several long-term occasional positions.I am currently a steady gigging musician in the Hamilton, Halton and Toronto areas. I currently play drums for The Quarter to Nine Jazz Band owned and operated by Shari Vandermolen. QTN plays a prohibition style of jazz music and plays at a variety of events and venues. I am also affiliated with the Allan Gaumond Tentet, which is comprised of some of the most talented jazz musicians in the GTA. I am an alumni of the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band and past member of many smaller ensembles needless to say my fervor for music goes beyond the classroom and into the community.
