Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, ABPP is a licensed psychologist and board certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology, co-director of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, a Diplomate and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and an Academy of Cognitive Therapy Certified Trainer/Consultant and an adjunct faculty member for the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy.Dr. Tompkins is the author or co-author of numerous articles and chapters on cognitive-behavior therapy and related topics, as well as nine books. He has been featured in a variety of media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, KQED, Arts and Entertainment and The Learning Channel and many local radio and television shows.Dr. Tompkins serves on the Advisory Board of Magination Press, the children’s press of the American Psychological Association and has presented over 300 lectures and workshops, nationally and internationally, on the topic of cognitive-behavior therapy.Dr. Tompkins treats adults, adolescents, and children with anxiety disorders (panic, worry, phobias, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, health anxiety), stress, insomnia, body-focused repetitive behaviors (trichotillomania, skin picking, nail biting), elimination disorders (enuresis and encopresis), and Tourette’s and tic disorders.

Beck’s original Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. Today Beck Institute is an international training and resource center for health and mental health professionals, educators, and students worldwide. In addition to offering training programs at our Philadelphia location, we help create or improve cognitive behavior therapy programs at universities, hospitals, community mental health centers, health systems, and other institutions.
