About Michael Shao
Michael Shao, MD, RPVI is a board-certified vascular surgeon and Section Chief of Vascular Surgery at Swedish Hospital in Chicago. His active clinical practice of vascular surgery spans open and endovascular surgery for carotid stenosis (carotid endarterectomy and TCAR), aortic aneurysm, PAD, dialysis access, and venous insufficiency including RF ablation, sclerotherapy, ClariVein, Varithena, and VenaSeal. He is a recognized expert on venous treatment with recent publications and several print media and radio interviews on the topic. Dr. Shao regularly gives presentations to physician peers about venous treatment, including at conferences such as AVLS, CVC, AVF and IVC. He maintains an active practice in the Wound Care Center. Dr. Shao is a physician advisor in the Clinical Documentation Integrity Program and is committed to improving hospital quality metrics and reimbursement, through physician education and CDI query review efforts. Dr. Shao enjoys mentoring and teaching medical students and residents at Swedish Hospital. He is a member of AVLS (American Vein and Lymphatic Society), SVS (Society of Vascular Surgery) and CSS (Chicago Surgical Society). He is active in hospital leadership, participating on committees on Surgical Quality, Wound Care, Health Informatics, Medical Records, Clinical Quality Value Analysis, and the Physician Advisory Board of Galter LifeCenter. Dr. Shao\'s publications include peer-reviewed clinical studies and translational/basic science studies as well as book chapters. Dr. Shao\'s academic background started at MIT where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry and a Concentration in Economics. He received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Dr. Shao then completed a general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Chicago, including two years of translational research in cancer gene therapy. He received the University of Chicago Surgical Society Travel Award, participating in surgeries in Santiago, Chile and the Academic Achievement Award for the highest in-service examination score among graduating chief residents. Dr. Shao also received the AOA teaching award given by graduating fourth-year medical students. He has extensive research experience in both academia and industry.
