Law for Patent Attorneys
ABOUT MICHAEL S.
High-stakes patent disputes sit at the intersection of technology, law, and risk – and that’s where I excel. As a Senior Patent Attorney in Hogan Lovells’ global patent litigation practice, I help technology-driven businesses navigate complex patent proceedings in Germany and before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).My work in patents began in 2018 on the prosecution side, where I learned how strong cases are built from day one. I worked with inventors, drafted applications, and steered matters through prosecution before the German and European Patent Offices. Since 2021, I have specialized in patent litigation and have worked on numerous infringement and validity proceedings before the UPC, German civil courts, the Federal Patent Court, the Federal Court of Justice, the German Patent and Trademark Office, and the European Patent Office, including its Boards of Appeal. My experience covers a wide range of technologies, in particular telecommunications and IT, electronics and electrical engineering, medtech, solar technology, and audio/video coding, as well as semiconductors, mechatronics and software. In this work, I can draw on extensive technical know-how gained during my electrical engineering and information technology studies at the Technical University of Munich, as well as practical experience from hardware and software development as well as product management in market-leading, high-tech environments. That combination helps me get to the technical core quickly and turn it into precise, persuasive positions for each case. When you work with me, we will break complex disputes into clear technical and legal questions. A large part of my work is defending technology companies against patent infringement accusations – both from competitors and from non-practicing entities – including standard-essential patent (SEP) matters. I work closely with our German attorneys-at-law as well as colleagues across Europe to ensure that arguments are consistent across forums.I am qualified as a German Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, and Registered Representative before the Unified Patent Court and I hold the European Patent Litigation Certificate (EPLC). Outside of work, I enjoy time with my family and our dog, and I recharge through music. Most often that means guitar, sometimes piano. When I can, I also like getting back to the mountains for skiing or snowboarding.
