ABOUT MICHAEL SCHAEFER
At Carbon Direct I perform scientific and technical diligence reviews of carbon removal projects to advise buyers on carbon credit quality. I currently focus on soil- and nature-based carbon removal projects like regenerative agriculture and enhanced rock weathering. I leverage expertise in environmental chemistry to ensure projects provide real and lasting environmental benefits while minimizing risks of human and environmental harm.My previous consulting experience includes 2.5 years at West Yost where I worked primarily in groundwater resources management, drinking water treatment and supply, and wastewater effluent discharge compliance and permitting. I was also previously a tenure-track faculty in the Hydrology Graduate Program at New Mexico Tech where I taught graduate courses on water chemistry and contaminant fate and transport, and an undergraduate course on global climate change. My previous research focused on fundamental and applied questions in soil and water chemistry, including contaminant leaching from point-of-use ceramic water filters, changes in soil properties resulting from shifts in arid agriculture irrigation, and naturally-occurring metals contamination in aquifers.
