About Michael Scancarello

Mike is an Assistant Vice President at WSP and a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. While much of Mike’s project experience is in the New England region, he has completed projects in most states on the east coast of the US. With experience in steel, wood, concrete and masonry design coming from both new construction and adaptive reuse projects in the cultural, residential, healthcare, education and retail sectors, Mike is proud to see the impact his projects have on their communities.Spurred by his role in the glulam design for the Music Center at Groton Hill – a project with and expansive performance and music education spaces all featuring exposed glulam structure – Mike has taken an interest in mass timber design and construction. Mike believes that incorporating mass timber elements into our buildings is one of many ways that designers can work to protect our future while creating warm and inviting spaces that seek to showcase the structure rather than hide it. While a champion of mass timber, Mike is also a firm believer that it is our responsibility as structural engineers to use the right material in the right application to ensure that our buildings are as high-performing as possible in all metrics. There are many solutions to every problem and Mike looks to study as many design options as possible, including hybrid structures, to help the team choose the system with the most advantages.Whether it is incorporating advanced technologies like BIM and VR to better understand projects before they are built, using laser scanning to better document and understand existing structures and aid in structural forensics or expanding our use of new products like CLT to create better performing buildings, Mike is passionate about finding ways to advance the skillset of structural engineers. In addition to his work as an engineer, Mike has an interest in helping future engineers find their passion and is active in outreach activities including the ACE Mentor Program.
