ABOUT MICHAEL ROBERTS

Michael leads Hogan Lovells\' disputes and investigations practice in London. He is an award-winning litigator, recognized in The Lawyer\'s \"Hot 100\" and part of the team that won The Lawyer\'s \"Litigation Team of the Year\" award (amongst others). His own practice spans the full range of corporate and commercial disputes, with a particular focus on asset recovery, insolvency and white collar crime.Michael is currently acting for ENRC in connection with its ongoing litigation against both Dechert and the Serious Fraud Office, including its high profile Court of Appeal victory on legal professional privilege. Michael also acts for the Ukrainian businessman Serhiy Taruta in connection with ongoing proceedings before the Commercial Court relating to the Industrial Union of Donbass.Michael has been involved in many of the leading fraud and asset-recovery cases over the past 20 years, including Madoff, the Tajik Aluminium litigation, and Equitable Life. For several years, Michael acted for BTA Bank in asset recovery proceedings relating to fraudulent transactions with a value well in excess of US$ 5 billion. Michael also acted for the DIA in connection with its proceedings seeking the recovery of approximately US$ 2 billion in connection with the collapse of Mezhprombank. That litigation generated a number of ground-breaking precedents regarding worldwide freezing injunctions and related disclosure orders. It also led to a series of judgments in relation to the validity of discretionary trusts and the ability of a judgment creditor to enforce against trust assets (so-called \"trust busting\"). Michael also has extensive experience litigating in common law and \"off shore\" jurisdictions, such as the Cayman Islands, the BVI, Cyprus, and the Isle of Man.
