How will humanity reverse the detriment caused by conventional development on this planet? As the founder and principal biotect of Earthship Biotecture, I address this existential question by pioneering the design of sustainable housing and authoring books to share my discoveries.To reduce the systemic barriers between humans and a holistic habitat, we must redefine the concept of contemporary shelter itself. Economics and ecology need to collaborate in a way that immediately resolves the critical problems with our existence on earth - water quality and supply, catastrophic failure of conventional infrastructure, food accessibility, inflated energy needs, exploitation of non-renewable resources, and mass garbage accumulation, to name only some.I began developing the Earthship concept in 1989 and it has evolved into a modern off-grid panacea. What started as an experiment has become a viable solution- autonomous homes that provide for its inhabitants by encountering and harvesting natural phenomena. All Earthship designs embody key principles: electricity generation, passive heating and cooling, food production, water harvesting and reuse, sewage containment and treatment, and a living structure built largely from natural and recycled materials.Through the development of three Earthship communities, I have seen that these homes can create a vision of a world no longer relying on fossil fuels. Though the design has been tested and refined in the American southwest, Earthships can be built in virtually any climate. The skilled crew at Earthship Biotecture has built Earthships in over 42 countries, and many more completed by individuals around the globe.Since 2011, the Earthship Biotecture campus in Taos, New Mexico has been hosting a range of programs for international students who wish to learn how to build an Earthship. Our methods are accessible and easy to replicate thus empowering those who are ready to live in peace with each other and their environment. Those who are ready to build on their own can purchase a construction drawing set of one of our many Earthship models. Consulting is also available for customizations, and opportunities exist to host students and field study education for cost savings on your build.The goal is to continue to prove and innovate the concept of the Earthship so that people can maintain independence over their resources, relinquish the need to rely on a municipal utility grid, and cultivate a stronger connection with nature. We must push through bureaucracy to evolve humanity into earthen harmony.
