About Michael Ray

I am a data scientist with Allstate Insurance, specializing in the development of machine learning models to produce business insights that save time and money. At current, I am developing pricing analytics tools using predictive models to better inform state managers on the impacts of rate changes and underwriting actions.Previous to becoming a data scientist, I studied physics, completing my master\'s degree at Stony Brook University in August of 2022. Throughout my college career in both undergraduate and graduate school, I maintained a strong focus on academic research outside of my courses. As the lead author on a recent paper in computational astrophysics (https://arxiv.org/abs/22•••••07) and a co-author on a publication in Quantum Field Theory (https://arxiv.org/abs/22•••••82), I am well-versed in using the scientific method to produce rigorous scientific results. I have brought these research skills to my data science career and applied them to business problems to produce actionable insights.

   Lead the construction and maintenance of high visibility and high value auto retention model, leading to better understanding by decision makers of the full scope of consequences of pricing and underwriting actions. Model build and maintenance includes the build-out of robust scoring functions and continued maintenance and monitoring of model performance, allowing for high confidence in model predictions- Implemented model monitoring and MLOps best practices for a production retention model, then advocated for expanding monitoring across additional models; successfully influenced leadership to prioritize the initiative and co-led the scoping and development of a reusable monitoring framework to standardize performance tracking and governance across a broader portfolio of models- Originated and led development of an internal R/Python data science package adopted by 10+ team members; managed a core development team of ~4 data scientists and coordinated contributions from a broader group to crowdsource features, standardize workflows, and accelerate analytics development.
