ABOUT MICHAEL PILATO

I am an electrical industry professional and regulatory leader with over 21 years of experience in risk-based oversight, statutory decision-making, and standards development. At Technical Safety BC, I oversaw the electrical technologies standards and technical programs helping to ensure safe and reliable electrical infrastructure systems for tens of thousands of British ColumbiansIn previous years, I also managed the operational side of the business, providing oversight for electrical, gas, and boiler duty holders. In the boiler technology this also required coordination with federal agencies and critical infrastructure operators. These experiences broadened my regulatory expertise across multiple technologies, strengthened cross-technology collaboration, and reinforced my ability to manage complex, high-risk programs. As a Technical Leader with Safety Manager delegated powers under the BC Safety Standards Act, I held statutory authority to issue directives, safety orders, and licensing decisions that directly shaped safety outcomes across the province. I lead a high-performing team of Senior Safety Officers, while advancing regulatory modernization, risk-reduction strategies, and national collaboration.Respected both at both the national and provincial level, I am recognized for consensus building and the ability to align diverse stakeholders behind fair, evidence-based solutions. I have represented BC and Canada on standards committees including CSA\'s Part I Canadian Electrical Code, many CSA technical subcommittees and standards, several UL standards as well as the Canadian and US advisory councils, two IEC mirror committees for lighting products, and I currently serve as chair of CACES (Canadian Advisory Council on Electrical Safety). During my tenure I also created a national uniformity call for all of the Provincial regulators. This call was instrumental in breaking down provincial barriers and worked tirelessly to achieve technical uniformity between provinces.I am both a strategist and an implementer with the ability to see the big picture while designing ground-level strategies that deliver measurable results. This balance has earned me credibility as a trusted leader who drives lasting public safety improvements and fosters confidence among regulators, industry, and the public.
