I joined Simon Ward and John Atack in 2018 to create the Medicines Discovery Institute at Cardiff University. Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, through the Welsh Government’s Sêr Cymru scheme, the Medicines Discovery Institute addresses a key challenge in the Welsh Government’s strategy for science and innovation by developing novel drugs for neuroscience, cancer and infection and immunity. Key roles- Establishing the new institute comprising chemistry, biology, DMPK laboratories and research offices: from design to implementation of state-of-the-art research facility & equipment provision (>£5M program)- Project leader for £5.7M MRC funded subtype selective GABAAR non-sedating anxiolytic program (hit to lead, lead optimisation and IND-enabling preclinical toxicology)- Managing the Early Neuroscience Portfolio which has led to raising funding for onward development for the treatment of postpartum depression (MRC DPFS, £2.2M, 2021) and Neurosteroid replacement strategy for treating postpartum psychosis (Wellcome Innovator award, £0.5M, 2020)- Operation manager directing all organisational operations of the Medicines Discovery Institute and overseeing >40 scientistsFunding raised- Wolfson Foundation (2019)(PI)- Welsh Government Sêr Cymru – Infrastructure Accelerator award (2021)(PI)
